Building history: The Excelsior Apartments building is a Category 2 New Zealand Historic Places Trust listed building. The architect was Robert Forrest, and the original building was completed in 1888, although it has been rebuilt and modified since through various building uses. Robert Forrest was the favoured architect of Dunedin's influential brewery industry, and consequently built a number of hotels and private houses for members of the Speight and Greenslade families.
The Excelsior stands on an important commercial intersection in the old Dunedin central business district. It replaced the Oriental, a gold rush hotel in exotic Renaissance style. The Excelsior was rebuilt at the turn of the 20th century as a commercial and family hotel with 50 guest rooms, a writing room, sitting rooms, dining rooms and bridal chambers. The Excelsior's license was transferred to the Gardens Tavern in the mid-1970's and the building converted to apartments.
