Balanced, almost precariously on the dunes as if ready to take flight,
this architectural and engineering artwork, crafted by Christopher Kelly of Architecture Workshop,
merge the clarity of concrete block, steel and board to provide a pavilion style design so innovative that it's ahead of its' time.

Quincunx (pron: kwin'kungks').
Latin for an arrangement of 5 objects with one at each corner of a rectangle or square and one at the centre.
This incredible dwelling is of 4 pods - 1 living and 3 sleeping positioned around a 5th central open air pod.

The minimalist design, winning multiple design awards and appearing in many architecture digests takes an avant-garde approach towards the classic kiwi bach,
allowing the owner to feel the land, to see the land, to breathe the land.

Firmly placed on the sand sits the base level of concrete block - comprising a self contained studio with ensuite and an adjacent bunkroom - the brief 'surfclub style'.

Flowing naturally through the landscape, the concrete pavers lead to the dramatic cantilevered upper level.
Influenced by the logic of French inventor Prouve, the neutrally toned living pod is separated from the sleeping pod by the covered macrocarpa deck.

Combining natural materials with the rawness of steel allows the building to blend with its surroundings.
The panoramic windows of the upper level open to bring the waves even closer.
Despite the house being almost new, it has the established feel of passing time with weathered board, rambling grasses and tussocks that meanders over the dunes on the 2.5 acre block.

The design, detail and quality of construction place this building in an elite genre.
